Yom Kippur Study Session

October 12 @ 3:00 pm 4:30 pm

Please join Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor and the congregation for our annual Yom Kippur study group, which promises to be a thought-provoking session.

This year’s Yom Kippur Jonah study, between the Yom Kippur morning/memorial service and Neilah, will begin with our traditional reading of the Jonah story.  We will then turn our focus to the condition of the waters surrounding Nantucket and the effect of its condition on marine life including on the fish we all eat. This topic is an interesting and relevant tie to the Biblical Story of Jonah. Jonah essentially asks the question twice in the story: Why should I care?  We, as dedicated and responsible Jews, want to satisfy our obligation to help preserve the integrity and health of the waters surrounding Nantucket. This cannot be achieved unless we understand the scientific information and data about the ocean’s current condition. To help achieve this, we will meet at the Maria Mitchell Aquarium, 33 Washington Street to hear a talk by Dr. Rich Blundell, the Maria Mitchell’s resident ecologist.  Opportunities will be available to ask questions in order to better understand the information.

2024 High Holy Days information, including a full schedule of all High Holy Day services, study sessions and other programs, and an online and paper registration form, will be available on our website shortly.

All are welcome
