Online Torah Study with Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor and Rabbi Margaret Moers Wenig

December 11 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

Torah study is a rich, rewarding, and fruitful activity that serves to help us understand both the difficulties and blessings of modern life. It can provide guidance during times that are challenging personally and communally.  In the initial years of the SHY adult education summer program, Torah study constituted the main format of the scholar weekend.  Since the death of our beloved leader and teacher Rabbi Reuven Cohen, we have not often engaged in the study of Torah. This year we hope to occasionally reengage in Torah study both during the on- and off-seasons. To this end, Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor has invited Rabbi Margaret Moers Wenig, D.D. to join him in a dialogue on the weekly Torah portion about Jacob as he wrestles with God, himself, and his brother Esau.

Rabbi Wenig is the Instructor of Homiletics (the art of writing and preaching sermons) at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, and as such, she has guided many of the past generation of emerging rabbis in how to preach and teach, dipping into the well of knowledge that is Torah.  Gary and Maggie will discuss the central Patriarch Jacob as he transforms into Israel — the lessons that emerge from Torah have impact on each of our lives, as we struggle to become the people we want to be. There will be an opportunity to engage in dialogue with one another after Maggie and Gary’s initial presentation.

In order to introduce Maggie to our congregation, we suggest you read the original version of God is a Woman and She is Growing Older her award winning sermon.  (Be prepared to cry — have some tissues nearby.)

Online only.
