Online Adult Education Event – “Rosenwald” with Aviva Kempner
January 19 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Congregation Shirat HaYam welcomes you to join our Adult Education Program presenting a discussion of the film Rosenwald with the director Aviva Kempner.
Aviva Kempner’s acclaimed film, Rosenwald, will be available for streaming January 13-17 (details to follow). Rosenwald is the incredible story of Julius Rosenwald, a high school dropout and a founder of Sears who became an influential philanthropist and built over 5,300 schools for African American students in the Jim Crow south in the early 20th century.
Aviva Kempner has been making award-winning documentaries for more than 40 years with an emphasis on rediscovering and celebrating lesser-known Jewish heroes. These include Rosenwald, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, Partisans of Vilna, Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, and The Spy Behind Home Plate. She is presently making a documentary about the award-winning Hollywood screenwriter, journalist and activist Ben Hecht, who exposed the horrors of the Holocaust to the American public and helped bring survivors to a permanent Jewish home in Palestine.
On Wednesday, January 19th at 7 pm, Aviva Kempner will join us by Zoom to talk about the making of the film and the remarkable legacy of Julius Rosenwald, followed by Q and A.
This free, online program has been organized by Shirat HaYam. If you wish to participate, please register by clicking HERE. Shortly after registering, you will receive an email confirming your registration.
