Online Adult Education Event – Session 1 – The Great [Jewish] American Songbook with Elliot Lazar
February 2 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
What do the songs “Summertime”, “Over the Rainbow” and “White Christmas” have in common? They are all part of the “Great American Songbook,” the canon of significant early-20th-century American jazz standards and popular songs. But what else do they have in common? All these songs were written by Jews. -yes, even “White Christmas”!
In “The Great [Jewish] American Songbook”, Elliot Lazar will explore the work and lives of those Jewish artists who shaped the musical landscape of the last century. The class will use an ethnomusicological lens to paint a vivid picture of Jewish life in America, through close engagement with the words and music of those who’ve experienced it.
- Session 1 Feb 2 – Overview of Jewish Music (History & Theory), New York’s Yiddish Theatre
- Session 2 Feb 9 – Jews, Jazz and the Tin Pan Alley
- Session 3 Feb 16 – Bagels, Broadway and the Brill Building
- Session 4 Feb 23 – Semitic Singer-Songwriters (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen) and Modern Mavens (Jason Robert Brown, Shaina Taub)
