Universities Must Tolerate Anti-Israel Protests, But Regulate Them to Protect Jewish Students.
Professor David Schanzer of Duke University will deliver a timely Zoom program for our congregation on Wednesday, May 15, from 7 to 8:30pm on the current student campus unrest and protests across the country. He is the author of the recent article Universities Must Tolerate Anti-Israel Protests, But Regulate Them to Protect Jewish Students.
Given the growing concerns and his friendship with past SHY President Peter Kahn, Professor Schanzer is willing to discuss his article with us and lead a discussion on the significance of the protests and where we go from here. We will have the opportunity to debate the ideas he raises and ask questions, all in an effort to better understand the protests, their root causes, and some of the possible management strategies.
Professor Schanzer is a professor of the practice at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. He is the Director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security. He teaches courses, conducts research and engages in public dialogue on counterterrorism strategy, counterterrorism law and homeland security. Prior to his academic appointments, Schanzer was the Democratic staff director for the House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005. He previously served as the legislative director for Sen. Jean Carnahan (2001-2002), counsel to Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (1996-1998), and counsel to Sen. William S. Cohen (1994-1996). Professor Schanzer is a graduate of Harvard College where he received an A.B. cum laude in government (1985) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1989). In 2023, Professor Schanzer was awarded the Richard Stubbing Memorial Teaching and Mentorship Award for outstanding contributions to the graduate programs at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy.
All are welcome.
